How To Manage Fire

Fire Emergency Guidelines :

If you discover a fire:
  • Alert people in the area of the need to evacuate
  • Activate the nearest fire alarm
  • Call Public Safety
  • Extinguish the fire, if it can be done safely (only if you are trained and are confident)
  • Confine the fire by closing all windows and doors

If a building fire alarm is sounding or you receive notification of a fire emergency:

  1. Don't panic. WALK to the nearest exit and out of the building.
  2. DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS.
  3. Feel the door or doorknob to the hallway with the back of your hand.
    • If it feels hot, do not open it - the fire may be on the other side of the door
    • If the door is not hot, open it slowly. If the hallway is clear of smoke, walk to the nearest fire exit and evacuate via the nearest stairs to the exit.
  4. Close all doors behind you to avoid spread of fire.
  5. Be calm and quiet and listen for instructions from trained personnel and fire fighters.
  6. Everyone is not required to fight fires. Individuals who have been trained in the proper use of a fire extinguisher and are confident in their ability may use a portable fire extinguisher to fight small, incipient stage fires.
  7. Never Enter A Smoke-Filled Room.
  8. If there is smoke, stay low but keep moving.
  9. Never proceed up stairs. Move to an upper floor only if directed by Fire Department personnel.
  10. Leave all lights on.
  11. When exiting the building, move cautiously and well away from the building. Watch out for falling debris
  12. If possible make note of all individuals in your department.Notify fire officials of any missing people.
